BlueAnn Fireworks Safety
Eating right, exercising, getting enough sleep, brushing your teeth and buckling your seat belt are all good things to do to help you stay healthy and safe. In this “Healthy Goodies” section of BlueAnn’s Wild and Woolly Web site, you will learn about different things you can do to be your healthy best. Today, we’re going to talk about Fireworks safety.

Are you getting excited about the Fourth of July? You’re probably looking forward to being out of school, playing outside and enjoying a family picnic, barbeque or cookout to celebrate our nation’s Independence Day. Did you know that July 4 is also the day America gained its independence? That’s why friends and family gather for picnics and fireworks shows.

Watching fireworks explode into beautiful sparkling colors and listening to a crowd full of people “ooh” and “aah” over every burst of light can be a ton of fun. But, BlueAnn wants to remind you to play it safe when it comes to fireworks. Remember, her motto is to “Have Fun, Stay Healthy.”

Thousands of kids get hurt by fireworks each year. Did you know that fireworks are dangerous? Fireworks can cause serious burns that leave scars, and they can cause eye injuries, even blindness. Prevent Blindness America says that from 1980-1994, fireworks caused 29 fires, 65 explosions and 114 deaths. And, almost half of the injured were kids age 19 and under.

Even sparklers are dangerous. Sparklers can heat up to more than 1000 degrees Fahrenheit, which is hot enough to melt gold. WOW, that’s hot!
